SPOTLIGHT

Just as an artist takes a blank canvas and turns it into a work of art, Jean Nakaerts of Marseilles, Illinois enjoys the idea of a blank slate with every dog, especially puppies. Each is an opportunity to create a masterpiece. Each dog's unique personality, breed, and home environment influence the picture.

In 1988, Jean began raising potential guide dogs for Leader Dog School for the Blind in Rochester, Michigan. Puppies attended Illinois Valley Community College with her as she obtained her Associates degree in Criminal Justice. In the fall of 1996, Jean began raising puppies for Canine Companions for Independence. Today, close to two dozen puppies have taught Jean a lot about canine and human behaviors and communications.

This knowledge is used to teach people why their dog does what he does, how to build confidence, teamwork, play training, communication, fair leadership, and much, much more. Puppy Kindergarten. Beginners Class, Intermediate, Canine Good Citizen, Agility, and Rally-O are taught a couple times each week. Other evenings are spent with dogs coming to play "Off Leash", in a fenced area. A tired dog is a good dog.

Jean also works full time at the LaSalle County courthouse.
